Review of John Baldacchino, Art’s Way Out: Exit Pedagogy and the Cultural Condition Sense, 2012. [REVIEW]Walter S. Gershon - 2014 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 34 (1):101-107.
What are the possibilities for art to provide non-reactionary, productive spaces for pedagogical endeavors? How can culture function pedagogically and critically beyond the continuing constraints of positivism on the one hand and fixed systems on the other? In what ways can art’s impasse open spaces, its weakness move beyond the teleological, and its exit provide pedagogical possibilities beyond its current horizons? These and other such questions about the limitations and potential for pedagogy and culture through the lens of art lie (...)

Rare copy number variants have a prominent role in the aetiology of schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Substantial risk for schizophrenia is conferred by large CNVs at several loci, including microdeletions at 1q21.1, 3q29, 15q13.3 and 22q11.2 and microduplication at 16p11.2. However, these CNVs collectively account for a small fraction of cases, and the relevant genes and neurobiological mechanisms are not well understood. Here we performed a large two-stage genome-wide scan of rare CNVs and report the significant association of copy (...)

Response to Walter Gershon’s Review of Art’s Way Out.John Baldacchino - 2014 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 34 (1):109-113.
Art’s Way Out invites readers to examine how what we call “art” enters a conditioned relationship with the polity that leaves the occasion of education and the condition of culture in a quandary that is at best inept and at worse oppressive. There are two reasons for this: because any relationship between art and education is aporetic by dint of how they have emerged in between their respective autonomous and heteronomous forms of being and knowing; and because in the volatility (...)

How and why philosophy was first called a system: Casmann against Hoffmann on Christian Wisdom and double truth [Jak a proč byla filosofie poprvé nazvána systémem: Casmann proti Hoffmannovi o Křesťanské Moudrosti a dvojí pravdě].S. Heßbrüggen-Walter - 2018 - Acta Comeniana 32:29-40.
How and why did the notion of philosophy as a system evolve in Germany at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries? Otto Casmann’s Modesta Assertio provides new answers to this question. Casmann, Clemens Timpler’s predecessor as professor in Steinfurt refers to other ‘like-minded philosophers’ who believe that philosophy is a ‘structured system of the liberal arts’. Casmann himself states that philosophy is a ‘structured unity of erudite wisdom’. The text is part of the debate between Daniel Hoffmann and (...)

    The EEG data indicate stochastic nonlinearity.Walter S. Pritchard - 1996 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 19 (2):308-308.
Wright & Liley contrast their theory that the global dynamics of the EEG are linear with that of Freeman, who hypothesizes an EEG governed by (nonlinear) deterministic-chaotic dynamics. A “call for further discussion” on the part of the authors is made as to how either theory fits with experimental findings indicating that EEG dynamics are non-linear but stochastic.

De Officiis.Marcus Tullius Cicero & Walter Miller - 2017 - William Heinemann Macmillan.
In the de Officiis we have, save for the latter Philippics, the great orator's last contribution to literature. The last, sad, troubled years of his busy life could not be given to his profession; and he turned his never-resting thoughts to the second love of his student days and made Greek philosophy a possibility for Roman readers. The senate had been abolished; the courts had been closed. His occupation was gone; but Cicero could not surrender himself to idleness. In those (...)

On Barrio, Lo Guercio, and Szmuc on Logics of Evidence and Truth.Abilio Rodrigues & Walter Carnielli - forthcoming - Logic and Logical Philosophy:1-26.
The aim of this text is to reply to criticisms of the logics of evidence and truth and the epistemic approach to paraconsistency advanced by Barrio [2018], and Lo Guercio and Szmuc [2018]. We also clarify the notion of evidence that underlies the intended interpretation of these logics and is a central point of Barrio’s and Lo Guercio & Szmuc’s criticisms.
